Cube0021 – Means to an End

Sun Tzu was a Chinese military strategist who wrote a book titled Art of War. The ideas within this book have been adapted or used directly in the business and success world, with numerous titled adapted to help different groups.

The History Channel recently reaired a two-hour program titled Art of War where Richard A Gabriel spoke on the difference between means and ends.

Starting Questions:

  1. How do you keep focused on your goals?
  2. What is the equivalent to a battle for you?
  3. Do all the advisers around you have the same mindset, skillset, or perspective?
  4. … … what questions came to your mind as you listened?

Comments

  1. I recorded some thoughts based on this episode:
    http://aly.me/36n

    the sections titles:
    – Business vs War
    – Keep Your Eye on the Prize
    – One Trick Providers
    – Need an Outside Perspective?

  2. 1. right now, my biggest method is to do these weekly reviews & then post my goals online. You can find them here: http://www.jonathannation.com/tag/last-week-this-week/

This forces me to not just go through my life and do what I do, but really evaluate where I am going and what I have accomplished towards those ends. The publicness is uncomfortable to me, but I am happy with the results (and don’t post everything).

  3. 2. At this point a battle is:
    – doing starting cube episodes & not internalizing, or posting reactions to them
    – consuming good media & doing little with them – like: write on the topics, share the good things, record, or change how I act

My battles that don’t win the war are things that take work, but are not enough to really achieve the goals.

  4. 3. Like I said in the audio response, there are people I listen to specifically because they view the world different from myself. I am always looking for good advisers, mentors & coaches.

I also take joy in providing value to others as a partner, coach, or consultant.
